Online Shopping Binge

/

I kind went nuts last week with the online shopping – between Thursday night and Saturday morning , I placed no less than 6 online orders…so many sales and coupons in my inbox…I couldn’t resist.

With the long holiday weekend and biblical flooding, almost all of the packages hit at once yesterday. Instead of half a dozen different posts, I figured I’d stuff most of them into one…

I am fairly shameless, so I’m not going to show the pile of underwear from Victoria’s Secret. Yup, I hoard panties, too.

I had been eyeing the Sephora Sun Safety Kit – I need to protect my easily scorched skin. Inside the kit are 16 different sun protection products in a cute travel bag: – AmorePacific Natural Protector SPF 30Clarins UV Plus Anti-Pollution Broad Spectrum SPF 50Clinique Moisture Surge CC Cream Broad Spectrum SPF 30 in Light MediumDr. Dennis Gross Skincare Dark Spot Sun Defense Broad Spectrum SPF 50 SunscreenDr. Jart+ Premium Beauty Balm SPF 45Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment SPF 15Josie Maran Cosmetics Argan Daily Moisturizer SPF 47Korres Yoghurt Nourishing Fluid Veil Broad Spectrum SPF 30Murad Invisiblur Perfecting Shield Broad Spectrum SPF 30Ole Henriksen total truth eye crème SPF 15Origins VitaZing Broad Spectrum SPF 15 Energy-Boosting Moisturizer with MangosteenPeter Thomas Roth Max Sheer All Day Moisture Defense Lotion SPF 30Shiseido Ultimate Sun Protection Cream SPF 50+ WetForce Broad Spectrum Water Resistant (80 Minutes)St. Tropez One Night Only in Light-MediumSupergoop! For my 3 samples, I chose Viktor & Rolf “Flowerbomb” (spicy and flowery, reminds me of a Victoria’s Secret scent), Maison Martin Margiela REPLICA “Beach Walk” (this doesn’t smell like a perfume – it smells like a thing – LOVE), and dr. brandt Do Not Age. Sephora was also running a Jetsetter deal – pick 3 extra samples – so I got Origins Clear Improvement Active Charcoal Mask, Smashbox Camera Ready BB Cream, and boscia Purifying Cleansing Gel. My face is gonna be SMOOTH.

I can’t say no to Birchbox’s Limited Edition Boxes. As soon as I got the email got the “Under the Sun” ($55) box, I knew I would eventually order it…but not until I got that 25% coupon. 25% off and $10 in Birchbox points and ADD TO CART. Inside the box: Baggu Tote Bag (I had my fingers crossed for this elephant print!), Cynthia Rowley Beauty Beauty on the Go Multi Blush & Bronzer Duo (meh), Laura Mercier Bakes Eye Color in “Cameo” (yasss), Sugarpova Flirty Candy (why does Maria Sharapova sell candy?), Chloe + Isabel Birchbox Exclusive Medina Convertible Pendant Necklace (my favorite part of the box!), Knockaround Premium Sunglasses (silver!), ncLA Nail Lacquer in “Bikinis & Martinis” (it’s the color of bubble gum you’d find stuck under a picnic table), and Supergoop! Skin Soothing Mineral Suncreen with Olive Polythenols SPF 40.

For samples, I got Vasanti Brighten Up! Enzymatic Face Rejuvenator and Sumita Jumon Contrast Eye Pencil. I also finally got my Birchbox Anniversary Keyring (not pictured).

…and today, I got a big box of Deep Cleansing Hand Soap from Bath & Body Works. You know that I start to get the shakes if I have less than 30 bottles under the sink. They were all between $2.75 & $3.25, plus 20% off and free shipping. I threw in a handful of Scentportables for my car for good measure.

I also received my Dream Polish Gem Glam Topcoat in “Lily Flower” – yes, it’s scented! This another popular one on Instagram and it’s 5 free – I can’t wait to try it out.

I am still waiting on my sale order from Delush Polish – that’s the only one that hasn’t arrived. I think I have enough stuff to keep me busy…until next week when all my subscription boxes start rolling in!

Just the Samples, Ma’am

/

Last week, Sephora was offering 5 face samples with every order, so I went ahead and ordered a gift I had been planning anyway. The 5 samples I picked were : tarte  Maracuja Oil (is Maracuja the next Argan?), Clinique Beyond Perfecting Foundation + Concealer in “9 neutral”, philosophy purity made simple 3-in-1 cleanser for face and eyes, Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector  in “OPAL” and Kat Von D Lock-It Tattoo Foundation in “Light 48” (I’ve been wanting to try this one for a while). I also got a free mini Make Up For Ever Lipstick in “Rouge Artist Natural” – it’s so tiny and cute!

Oh, and I signed up for Sephora Flash, too! For $10, I’ll get free 2 day shipping from Sephora for a year…this is very, very dangerous, I can already tell.

The Purge

/

After painting my nails, I decided to clean out my makeup drawers…you know, to make room for more makeup.

For years – nay decades, I’ve been searching for the perfect foundation. I scooped up all the failed attempts – Revlon Colorstay, L’Oreal True Match and whatever other liquid, powder and concealer and chunked it.

All the old eyeshadow, blush and lipstick, I put in a box for Lily to play with. There were about a dozen Clinique, Lancome and whatever “Gift  with Purchase” lipsticks that my mother had given me. Since she died nearly 9 years ago, I figure that I had held onto them long enough.

I found enough old razors to shave a Sasquatch – gone. I found 3 boxes of Sally Hansen mustache bleach – ha! Gone. A squeeze bottle from when I used to dye my own hair…lord knows I won’t be doing that again. I found an unused pregnancy test…I kept it, but not sure why.

As good as buying stuff feels, throwing stuff away feels even better! I’m not quite back to square one makeup wise, I kept all of the Urban Decay eye stuff, no matter how old.  I’m not quite THAT strong.

I also learned something very important today. Don’t ever tag a pic #Purge on Instagram. Apparently, that’s what anorexics, bulimics and cutters use to tag their posts. I clicked on the tag and was treated to pics of bleeding forearms. WTF teenagers? What happened to getting wasted on Mad Dog and Strawberry Hill and giving yourself tattoos with India Ink?

Big Girl Makeup

/

After using Cover Girl powder foundation for the last few years, I decided to take Dr. Delta’s recommendation and pick up some MAC Powder Foundation, or as I call it – “Big Girl Makeup.”

“Big Girl Makeup” is makeup that you can’t buy at Wal-Mart or the Grocery Store. Horror of horrors, I actually had to go to a Macy’s to buy the stuff. It’s not like this is the first “Big Girl Makeup” that I’ve used. I used Bare Minerals for a while when I the mineral craze hit – 2006? I used it for a while, but then as I got further past 30, the minerals began highlighting my crow’s feet. I switched to Mary Kay mineral foundation, which is lighter (and cheaper), but again, I felt like my aging skin needed more coverage. I went back to my old faithful from college – Cover Girl powder foundation – around the beginning of 2011.

On a side note, when I did a clean application Saturday night and presented myself to my husband – he said I looked pasty. I know he’s not used to seeing me in thicker makeup, but I’m also thinking that I had been wearing the wrong color of Cover Girl. I had gotten a decent tan after a few vacations in 2011-2012 and went a shade darker than when I was in college, but it might have been time to go lighter. I’d noticed quite a few pictures giving me a darker face than my neck recently, but I won’t know if I got the right shade of MAC until I take more pics…I am naturally rather pasty anyway.

I let the salesgirl talk me into buying $40 primer with my $27 powder foundation, after she tried some on my face and it did a fair job of masking my humongous pores. (Julep Blank Slate might be better though – I need to compare?) I even tried the primer underneath the Cover Girl this morning and it was better than without…but still not as full coverage as the MAC.

If I don’t end up sticking with MAC, I’m going to try Clinique. My mom always wore Clinique and so does my BFF. I’ll continue to chronicle my adventures in “Big Girl Makeup”…
